Collection includes correspondence, 1862-1915, accounts, and other scattered materials of Benjamin Lyons Farinholt of West Point, Va., concerning his service as an officer in the 53rd Virginia Infantry Regiment of the Confederate Army (especially in regard to the defense of Charlotte and Halifax counties, Va., and a battle at Staunton River Bridge in 1864 and including a letter of Robert E. Lee), his activities as a member of the United Confederate Veterans (especially in regard to veterans' reunions), and his candidacy for appointment to the Virginia State Board of Fisheries.

Robert Edward Lee (1807-1870) served as General of the Confederate Army in the U.S. Civil War and was president of Washington College in Lexington, Virginia from 1865 to 1870. Lee spent the first twenty-three years of his military career in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
